What can Illustration do for you?

Illustration is a thoughtful blend of art and science that presents ideas in an appealing and meaningful way. As a means of communication it is a 'quick read' and relays the essence of an idea very efficiently.

Using illustration

In graphic design, illustration and photography stand side by side as the predominant means of presenting pictorial information. Each has it's own strengths and limitations. If you need to show something that doesn't actually exist, illustration is the obvious choice. Cameras are limited to recording what's in front of them.

Because of it's highly selective nature, illustration is a better choice if the subject is cluttered with details that distract from the message. Extremely large scenes, particularly interiors, are another situation where it's good to contact an illustrator. Complex location photo shoots can be expensive and at times it's literally impossible to place a camera to capture the entire subject.

Though it's more subjective, style is often the best reason. Using a good illustrator with a strong style makes a statement that fixes the subject in the viewers mind.

Starting A New illustration project

For illustration projects I can begin with almost anything, verbal descriptions, napkin doodles, engineering drawings, photos or product samples. If the project allows, I do rough concept sketches and/or detailed pencil studies as preliminaries. If not, I jump right into Adobe Illustrator with an occasional power assist from Photoshop.

The end result is tailored to fit the scope of the project. It can be anything from simple elegant line drawings to full color, highly realistic vanishing point perspective renderings.
